Domestic Wall Painting, Alloue, France
This is an unusual surviving domestic wall painting in a privately owned chateau in France. The style is semi naive, and it is clearly a local scene. The painting was in very poor condition after many years of neglect, with both incidental and deliberate historical damage.
This has been an ongoing project for me which will slowly conserve all three sides of the painting surrounding a chinney piece, to produce a stable and visually coherent whole. The conservation work undertaken has included cleaning, fixing, multiple repairs, and reintegration of the losses. The areas around the damage to the heads, thought to have occurred at the time of the French Revolution, were stabilised and made safe, and the losses toned down, but not restored, to keep the historical integrity.
